Dark Continuum
The 12 month series for this year’s Drawing Subscription will be a different beast than either year prior. This series will be a throwback to the pieces Things In My Studio That Make Black (2004 and 2007). Initially, these works came about in much the same way as the Drawing Subscription itself, creating a window into the studio practice by revealing the elements that are being worked with to compose the particular works or series being generated at that time. I thought the subscription would be a great vehicle in which to revisit the idea as part of my own studio history, present and future; continuing to share the process with subscribers as a glimpse into the continuum of artistic investigation and practice. As this year closes I’ll be be preparing to create a complete overview of the Black Laboratory Color System as it exists on the timeline of the studio’s overall production arch in 2013.

Apparitions
This series of drawings exploits the looming spectre of Modernism by utilizing an antiquated method of mark making and image transference. This process will generate a series of elegant works which speak to the history of minimal/color field painting as a resonating presence in the present day.
Consider how Steve Reich’s Piano Phase creates a level of dissonance by allowing the same progression of notes to ebb and flow in and out of sequence. Mirroring each other, but also falling out of sync. Similarly, the four works produced for this special quarterly subscription series will each resonate as something of a ghost image of the previous drawing but slightly out of sync with its predecessor.
