I’m very excited to be participating in a group show opening Saturday, November 21st at the newly opened Stout Projects in Brooklyn, NY. This will be their second exhibition and I am in incredibly good company with the likes of Karen Baumeister, Jonathan Cowan and Debra Ramsay. The exhibition opens Saturday, November 21st from 2-4 pm and will run until December 20th. There will be an artist talk on Saturday, December 19th at 2 pm.

Prepping for Year Four

I’ve been doing some catch-up in the studio and will be back on top of documentation next week, but in the interim, November’s coming with or without us. That means the window will open for a new series in the Drawing Subscription family! We’re getting very excited for what’s in store. It will be a continuation on some of the themes we’ve already been working with like decay, transformation, memory and the ongoing reinterpretations of the Modernist canon.

Eugene Thacker on Black

It may come as no surprise that I’m a fan of Eugene Thacker’s “Occultural Studies” column for Mute Magazine. Well, now he’s gone and written specifically about Black, and discusses Robert Fludd’s black etching, which was the inspiration for Mystical Geometries, the first series which launched this drawing subscription project. He also discusses some of the obvious players from Caravaggio to Reinhardt, and manages to slip in a nod to our friend Terence Hannum, a fantastic visual artist and member of drone-metal outfit Locrian.

Paradise Lost at MINUS SPACE

I am very excited to announce Paradise Lost a solo exhibition at MINUS SPACE gallery in Brooklyn opening May 10, 2013 and continuing through June 15, 2013. This series of paintings has been a long time in the making, having been constructed using strict classical techniques of the old masters. Through a series of warm and cool black glazes the surfaces of the paintings are carefully built up and then varnished to a high gloss finish. There is an active decay inherent to the work which results from a series of candles burning on a shelf underneath the paintings leaving faint traces of activity by way of the accumulation of heat and soot, slowly eating away at the surface and altering the work over time at an almost glacial pace. As a result, these works are not only meant to challenge the viewer’s sense of history, memory, evolution, and transcendence, but also their grasp of the precious.

I am truly honored to be showing this work with Matthew and Rossana, whose tireless efforts and dedication have become manifest as one of the smartest and most interesting programs presenting minimal/non-objective work in all of New York.
