With December’s drawings sent and in-hand for subscribers, Surface Disruption has been completed. In the studio we are currently focusing and organizing to have both Dark Continuum and Apparitions all set for Jan 2013. It is quite exciting, as the first year to offer two different subscriptions, and we’ll see how things evolve. Big thanks to the 2012 subscribers, and a big thanks to those jumping in for 2013. You won’t be disappointed.

Surface Disruption, Vincent Como, Drawing SubscriptionSurface Disruption 12 has now made its way out of the studio to the 2012 subscribers!  This series is Toner on Vellum, folded with archival double-sided tape.  All works begin with an 8.5 x 11 inch page of perfect black space, which then succumbs to the weight of its own history, collapsing the purity of the monochrome surface.  (ed 12/12 pictured)

The Black Singularity in Drain Magazine

It is with great delight that we are able to share with you a new writing project which became manifest this past summer. As with most summer reading/writing, it is a feel-good nihilistic romp exploring black, and the threshold for human understanding and relation as structured through archaic beliefs, quantum mechanics, psychology and aesthetics. We’re very excited to see it published in the new issue of Drain Magazine, an online journal of contemporary theory, with this current issue being dedicated entirely to BLACK.

Enjoy…Or, Be Warned! (Whichever is more applicable)

Either way, check it out here: The Black Singularity

In 2004 I created the first iteration of Things In My Studio That Make Black. It was a big hit and really opened up the practice of the studio by becoming a window into the other series’ and projects I’d been working on, or was gearing up to start, through cataloging the various materials on-hand that were to be used in other works. In 2007 I revisited the idea with a second version, this time approaching the format through small independent pages for each different medium. Some were the same, standards if you will, that are always on hand in the studio, while others were new media that I was trying out for different projects.

In many ways, the Drawing Subscriptions are meant to function in a similar capacity. To become a window into the thinking process in the studio through a series of monthly drawings.  The drawings then, work out other ideas and aspects of production within the studio.

In wanting to revisit this type of framing for the studio practice, the full-year subscription for 2013 is meant to be that link. The Dark Continuum which pushes forward into the future of the studio’s practice, while acknowledging where we’ve already been and the foundation which has been laid. Get on board, and watch it unfold for yourself!
